I also planted out 30 daffodil bulbs, and 57 (yes) tulip bulbs in the spot vacated by the pampas grass. It was getting dark by this point and I was rather chilly so it will be an interesting arrangement if they do pop up in spring!
Chuck a spade full of soil in the top of the brown bin, ensure its all nice and moist! The microbes contained in there will start breaking down the contents and by march you might want the contents for your own compost!

    • Repaired polytunnel with polytunnel tape. I've got lots of scratch marks all over it. Can only think that a cats curiosity has got the better of it

      • Gave my compost bins a quick shoogle with the turner - nice to see some worms in there! Also added some asparagus ferns I'd just cut down, and two bags of rabbit waste - all dampened down with a big bottle of 'apple juice'.

            • I just went out to top the bird feeders up & noticed my brocolli has started producing a few tiny purple heads, that's made me really happy,I thought they were just going to be leaves,I thought they were doomed when the ice weighed them down that week,I wonder how big the heads will get & how to grow them etc. Caterpillars are active here again, some huge droppings but couldn't find it/them.

              • My Timperley Early rhubarb started sprouting new leaves about a week ago - means it only stops for about 5 weeks... Did a compost run today - and dug some of the weed surpressing nasturtiums in - they only succumbed to the frost last week.

                    • Added some horse manure to some of the old compost i shall be using to grow my tomatoes next year, I'll be mixing it with fresh homemade compost. Hopefully that'll make a good medium for them to grow in.

                      • Hi all- I've been away for a while. Sadly I had to give up my allotment two years ago due to work and family commitments. It broke my heart and I lost my gardening mojo. However, it's back now and I am desperate to get stuff done. I've optimistically sown some herb seeds on my windowsill and planted some broad beans in a tub this morning.

                        • Hello again Likac - welcome back
Sorry you've lost your plot but, even if you only have a couple of pots, you can always grow something
Sounds like you've made a good start

                          • Finally felt well enough to get back over the plot! Have planted up some onion and garlic sets, and put in some daffodil and tulip bulbs. The mice have had a field day in the shed, it not only stinks in there, but theyve also been at my seed packets! Serves me right for carting round the specially bought seed tins in the boot of the car for the last three months and not put them in the shed where they belong.
Took delivery of around 30 big paving slabs, think pavement sized. My OH friend has also got me 20 pallet collars from the industrial tyre place where he works - he's warned that they are big! So free raised beds for me!
Just hope that christmas is dry so we can get over there and catch up with stuff.

                            • Added some more manure to rhubarb bed.
Sifted 1 bag of my leaf mould, removing sticks and pieces that need breaking down further. Leaving the lovely black&crumbly stuff.
