I will be trying some tomatoes outside as recommended on the packets. The others will be in the polytunnel. Many of them are also plum tomatoes, which I usually turn into passata.

                  • The rainbow radishes I sowed a few days ago have sprouted.

The baby pak carrots I planted a few weeks ago have started sprouting but something is eating them soon after they sprout. What likes newly sprouted carrots but leaves other young seedlings alone? I have lettuce, perpetual spinach, tomatoes, dill, carnations and a few other young seedlings in the same mini-greenhouse and those are untouched.

For no reason other than having too many seeds on hand and sheer stubbornness, I just planted a heap of capsicum seeds. The hope is that they'll develop enough before it turns cold to over-winter and be strong enough in 6 months to thrive through the early heatwaves which set my tomatoes and capsicums back last year.

Mightn't work, but it's not really going to cost me anything to try and I just might manage to get more than one capsicum in 5 months this year.

I know that slugs have plant preferences, they don't really like tomatoes, they love my Brussels sprouts but aren't touching my lettuce, you could try putting spring onions amongst/near them or flowers to hide the scent of the carrot? I don't know much about Australian carrot top munchers but good luck!

Also,if it is slugs,French marigolds can be planted as a trap crop, they love French marigolds!

                        • The carrot seeds I sowed 4 days ago have started sprouting. The radishes took 3 days.

I'm so happy with the new seed supplier I found. Cheap as anything and the germination rate is amazing.

Is it a website you get your seed from?

                              Yes it is.

Australian quarantine restrictions are super strict and some seeds can't even be sent between states so it's no benefit to anyone outside Australia, but I'm delighted to have found a supplier which is super cheap and has top quality seeds.

Haven't worked out what was munching the baby pak tops but moving them back inside fixed the problem. I'll put them under netting when they go back outside.

I'll say. I once made the mistake of writing to my friend in Australia on handmade paper that had dried flowers incorporated into it. They cut out all of the flowers and sent her what was left; which was of great use to her... not. They could at least have photocopied it before ripping it to shreds. [Perhaps this is a rant]
