  • Adzuki beans :)

Having seen the previous thread (now locked for obvious reasons) I am now confused. I was actually going to order some of these from moreveg

Adzuki Bean naturally nurtured seed - Moreveg

Are we saying these won't grow in the UK? as they make no mention that these are a special variety

Perhaps it would be better value to pop into your nearest supermarket and buy a bag of adzuki beans that are sold for sprouting, to experiment with. You can be sure they'll germinate, and at about £1.60 for 500g, much better value than from a seed company.

If they won't grow long enough to produce bean pods outside in the UK, you'll still have close to a pound of beans to cook or sprout and eat.
    Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
    Endless wonder.

I'm planning to try them this year, but I'm in a place with hotter summers than the UK. They are closely related to Yardlong beans, so maybe they'll grow in the same conditions. Has anyone tried them?

There are apparently different varieties of adzukis that grow at different latitudes, and some might be more suitable for the UK. This US company sells a variety that they say are particularly early and tolerate damp autumns/falls. https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/produc...-bean-organic/ So why not email MoreVeg and ask them about the ones they're selling?

Someone always has to be the first I suppose In the closed thread there is a link to an older thread, given east anglia has a long summer period (compared to most of the uk) TS only harvesting a handful is enough to put me off trying them

Just had a bit of a google to be nosy, although I don't have space for any more beans than I plan to grow this year, and I noticed on Wikipedia that they are also called red cowpeas, which were being sold on ebay a couple of weeks back. I didn't get any for the above reason. Only 99p or cheaper I think, from china so might be worth a go by someone who is curious and has the space.

I've emailed them, so will see what they say.

I have some in the cupboard I suppose I could try. If they only need enough frost free days for pods to form, then I should be ok, I was going to try them green anyway. It sounds like they take a bit of germinating so if I start them off early inside, that may help. Wanted to experiment with some soy beans too as they can be tricky to get hold of sometimes.

Good luck, let us know how you get on
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Try yours as sprouting seeds first - just to be sure they're viable. If they were sold for cooking you don't know how old they are!

(very speedy) reply from moreveg was that they advise to grow as greenbeans (which don't need to ripen). I will try sprouting a few first to see if they're still good.
