Grafted Tomatoes

Good day everyone,

I have a taste for a good tomato.

One year I grew 6 different varieties to try and find one that hit the mark.
Sadly, whether it was lack of feed or not they didn't do much for me.
I know that they would all cross pollinate and eventually all taste the same.

So...what difference does grafting do?

More of the same tasteless toms?

And what do they graft them on too?

My favorite is Raff but at £25 for F1 type...

So I think it will be Gardeners delight again...unless you lovely people out there have any suggestions

So...what difference does grafting do?

It should improve disease resistance, plant vigour and hopefully overall crop and fruit size.

More of the same tasteless toms?

Tasteless toms can be caused by lack of feed, sun, too much water etc. Most of my toms lacked flavour last year

And what do they graft them on too?

You can graft your own tomatoes, I havent tried it but it doesnt look too difficult, there are vids on youtube.

Have you tried the variety Sungold? that never fails to have a good taste for me.

Personally I didnt do well with Gardiners delight, compared to modern cherry varieties they arent as sweet, some folks like that but I think I have a sweet tooth, the sweeter the better for me.

Preferred taste is very personal, I don't like the very sweet ones as they don't taste like tomatoes to me and need more acidity. I find too much watering usually makes tasteless fruits. Grafting is supposed to make the plants more vigorous and therefore produce more, I don't want more of one variety as I like a mix for different purposes and even within a single dish but again, that's my preference. Personally I also think they're very over priced and unnecessary and as most of my tomato seeds have been saved from years ago I have no expenditure there. Fortunately a high proportion of tomatoes don't cross easily so you can save seeds happily without concern about ending up with them all the same.
