Tomato growing diary 2016

Seaweed extract is said to give a bit of protection from the cold but it's so cold at night I couldn't leave them out overnight,I don't really like them out of the blow away during the day it's a bit cold (I had to leave about 5 plants outside the blow away yesterday because of space problems,but bought them indoors at about 3pm,blow away ones come in at 6-7pm. Is it worth sowing a few extra quick maturing tomato varieties,red alert are sow April,my plants are tiny,just incase the purple leaved plants don't recover?
Edit to add also if you stop the plants at two trusses they'll mature quicker.

It seems a lot of people are having problems this year then.

Going to change the compost on another 2 of my plants today once the compost has warmed up a little bit as the bags are sat outside and it's snowing. I can see them gradually changing to that pale green yellow colour like some of my others have so I'll prick them out as best i can (they're a few inches high now) and put them in this new compost.

That nettle feed i started last night in boiling water looks good and i;m wondering whether to use it as well as putting them in new compost?

Don't over do it. The compost should be enough for now. Too much feed can also cause problems.

Its not too late to sow tomatoes, so if you are worried, start some more. Most of my outdoor and greenhouse plants are currently at the seed leaf stage.

For those with yellowing leaves - I had a plant that looked really quite sick under my growlights and banished it to the kitchen windowsill where it was cooler. The plant is looking much better although the lower leaves are pretty much dead:



Of 2 sideshoots I potted up that are currently under lights, one is happy and green and the other is going yellow. No idea why, but given that the plant in the photo has recovered, I am hopeful that it will survive.

I have a packet of tumbling tom that says you can sow them through May so if things take a turn for the worse, I'll sow 6 or 7 of them and they can be my replacement tomato plants. I'm hoping a change in compost will see them pick up though.

"Molly coddled" mine most of the afternoon! Been a very strange overly cold and drawn out "Spring" this



But enough is a enough! Tomorrow is gunna be a pick of the crop! Never have I had to "Fanny About" this much with Tomatoes!

I left mine in the GH last night as the temps were forecast for around 10. Tonight's forcast are for lows of 2 so I'm going to get the boys to bring them back in for the night. It's also cold tomorrow but the rest of the week looks much warmer. I think I may be biting the bullet and leaving them out soon.

I put mine out in the growhouse for the first time today. They'll be going out again tomorrow. They'll be going into their final pots by the end of the week and staying out there in the growhouse 24/7.

mine are going out to the blowaway tomorrow too... will harden them off for a week then leaving them to it. They're northerners - we all need to learn to deal with it

Yeah, they will be getting a newspaper covering like they did last night.

I had to bite the bullet and do it as some of them were turning yellow and pale.

Scoot I find its fine putting them in much larger pots as long as you just water around the plant and not the whole pot
