Let's talk about Carrots !

Okay, next question!

When I do grow carrots I find that within a day or two they are sad shrivelled things, rather spongey and bendy.

But advice is often to take all the carrots from a pot in one go so as not to attract the awesome fly. So without resorting to a damp sand clamp in the kitchen and assuming I manage to grow a sizeable bunch; how should I be storing my carrots?

I think the idea is not to completely fleece them. But to stake each corner of the bed ya growing em in and creating as I would describe a fleece fencing. Allowing the top growth to grow unhindered.

Well that's how I read it, and what I shall be doing!

Fencing is a nightmare to get to work and anyway it's a myth that carrot flies can't get over as they catch in the breeze. I've tried it and it just didn't work. I now just put short stumps of broken canes round the bed to give some air space above the bed then weight the enviromesh down with water bottles etc all round the edge. It's a doddle and works perfectly.

I don't think carrots keep well out the ground for more than a few days so always leave in the ground until I want them but you are supposed to be able to store in damp sand.

Anyone else ever had success transplanting carrots?! I know this is not the usual practice, however last year i had to start a lot of my veg off in trays as I obtained my plot in mid march and needed a lot of work before i could so anything. I sowed in trays to get things going and moved the carrots in when the ground was suitable and grow some lovely sized carrots.

I was thinking of doing the same this year as the cold spell is delaying my sowing intentions.

This thread had given me an idea on how to grow carrots, and probably lots of other veg that needs no pollination.

A 30 litre heavy duty plant pot with a small cane (about 1' above the surface) and one of those cheap 'fleece jackets'. Sow the carrot in the pot, put the jacket over so nothing can get in (apart from the rain). The cane will support the jacket and give the carrots (or whatever) room to grow.

In fact, it sounds like even I couldn't go wrong so is there anything blindingly obvious that I'm missing

I use enviromesh as its more sturdy than fleece which I always finds tears too easily.

I'll certainly be using something as I made the mistake last year if trying to get away with using nothing apart from lifting them up off the floor.

That looks great and just what I had in mind. Rectangular containers, bamboo stake at each corner, enviro mesh over the top and secured with bungee cords.

I've just got to get around to actually sowing some seeds

I use plastic 45 gallon drums cut in halve filled with sived compost, 4ounces Q4 mixed into 60 litres compost ,with 4 bamboo canes pushed into compost empty plastic bottles inserted over top of canes for fleece to go over then bungee cords around drum to hold fleece in place, using Sweet Candle seed.
Then compost is used for potatoes the following year

I have only had carrot success once and cannot remember what I did. I would like to have another go, my question is are they ok to go in my old beetroot compost trough , should I use fresh new bought veg compost or I have some old saved potato compost. Do I need to feed them when planting seeds?
Any ideas appreciated. I thought I may put the trough in greenhouse as due frosts again this weekend, I could fleece it outside I guess.
