How much corn should I plant together?

Ive got two areas where I can plant corn, one gets full sun morning noon and evening the other gets a bit shade in the evening.

I have bought the swift variety which has 30 seed in (I could add another 30 at a push) I am not sure what the pollination is like on these in the uk, but was told I need to plant alot together but how much is alot?

Anyone else had sucsess with swift?

Also should I soak the seeds overnight or just pot them up in the greenhouse?
Last years where very hit and miss.

Swift has been really good for me. I only have one space to plant them in, so I plant one foot apart in two staggered rows
Shake the tassels to assist pollination and you will be good to go.
Two or more cobs to each plant, very tasty too
I don't soak them before planting on a window sill - no greenhouse.

This is my first year growing sweet corn and this is exactly what i will be doing because i havn't got loads of room.

I always soak mine, it can speed up germination a lot, only over night till they swell.

Corn is one of the few things that I chit before I put them in their paper pots to grow on.

Plant them in agrid pattern, a foot apart each way. It's supposed to help with pollination. I have always done quite well with mine so appears to work. I start mine off in toilet roll tubes which works well. I haven't ever chitted mine so I would suggest it is not absolutely necessary but if you want to ensure your seeds germinate then you could chit.

Do they tolerate root disturbance well? Are you supposed to break the root ball up if need be?

I have never had a problem, i planted into cells last year after chitting maybe a bit too much, far more than i had done before. let them grow on for about a month and a half, then planted out all over 100, i lost about 15% but i do not think it was to do with transplanting just the fact it got to 43 degrees in April just after i planted them and i could not keep up with watering. It was a bad year for the weather last year.
