The chilli plants that gets I pinch out to encourage a bushy plant would be the faster growing varieties. The ones that will give you a decent crop this year. The slower varieties I hope to overwinter, they often don't fruit that well in their first year and don't grow that fast. I often have to prune these during the dormant season. There isn't a hard or fast rule here. It's up to you if you want to pinch them out, some I do, some I think are branching out without help. I often do it with flowers, fushias etc. if you have two plants you could just experiment with one?

Quick video here on pot size - bigger the better

Well the way my numex twilight is growing, I'll be lucky if it's 6 inches tall come the end of the growing season.

        • I had a habanero in the house, it was in a huge plant pot. 3maybe 4 times as big as the black flower buckets. The plant hit the ceiling and filled my bay window. It got replaced by our Christmas tree .

Scoot, just to cheer you up! All these bu@@ers on here showing off with their lights

Not much more than an inch tall...
I sowed 4seeds (I think) only two came and they are both tiny! Love the look of the plant though - quite excited about this one

Yes Scarlet, they are great. My first year using the lights and the plants seem to love it and to me anyway, they appear to grow more bushy and dense at the bottom than ones on window sills...I have been swapping them around too, so all get a turn under lights and on windows.
The other obvious benefits are the heat they give out which the chilli plants love and also, it gains me a lot more space for germinated plants..therefore I do not have to cram stuff on window sills (although I still am

Start dropping some hints to the men about how you deserve a present for next year; loads of them on Amazon (growlights that is, not men

No excuses!! They practically work from out of the box..all you need is a nice holder so you can raise and lower the height as required or like me, use paint cans etc

I just built little frames for mine from some laths - It really only took half an hour. The lights are hung up on string so it's easy to riase them if needed but I never have as the tall ones just get replaced with short ones as the tall ones graduate to other places

I'm amazed. They sow mid Jan, prick out and pot on in Feb. In May they are transplanted into huge pots, with chicken manure pellets mixed in for a slow realease feed. Watered often with a liquid feed. By Aug they picked over 2000 chillies off one plant. That plant was grown in 160litre pot.

                              • look on the bright side, it's not leggy and it's a good colour

Actually I'd be tempted to lift it a little, it's planted quite deep in that pot, the sides may be shading it. Gently take the lot out, put a little more compost in the bottom of the pot just to raise the plant a bit.
