  • I think I'm going to start in January instead of February. I'm going to be ruthless and only grow 2 of each, I'll sow 4seedsper variety and bin or gift the surplus.
I'm only going to grow 10/12 varieties.
Pinching out has delayed fruiting but my plants are really healthy for it. I get a lot more sun that you SP. so I think I'll stick with it.

The major break through for me was sticking a small plant in a huge pot with chicken manure pellets. That plant put on huge growth. I will try this again over most of my plants.

    • Hullo everyone. Haven't been about for ages as my Too Many Plants 'Problem' is taking up just about every free moment. Bliss! A few chili comments though....

I brutally decapitated two of my Korean cayenne plants and grew them in the same spot as two plants that were left alone. As others have mentioned, the mutilated ones fruited a lot later but I'm getting at least 50% more fruit on them. These plants fruit early though, so not a problem. I don't think I would do it with any of the other varieties I grow or I'd miss the season.

Sante Fe Grande (my first time) are doing well. Chunky-looking pods but actually mine are quite thin-fleshed which is a disappointment. Some friends and I munched on a couple a few weeks ago and the heat level was disappointing too. HOWEVER I picked a few more yesterday to try and those ones were super-hot. I've seen a few comments on various sites that the low Scoville unit is misleading and after yesterday I tend to agree. Numerous glasses of milk and opinions from 2 of my other regular tasters would back me up. I don't think the plants are stressed in any way so that doesn't explain it. Much hotter than the scotch bonnets I grew last year.

Fresnos are starting to fruit now but plants are half the size they were at this stage last year which is disappointing as they're my favourite for cooking with.

Costeno amarillo (first time growing) have been very disappointing. Small unhealthy looking plants. Some of them are just starting to flower now so I'm hoping to get a few fruit before autumn!

      • Sounds as if it's all pretty much going to plan for you gringo.....!

I've found the only ones yet to fruit are my Orange Habaneros - although it's probably due to these being sown at the end of March, and still relatively small - whereas all others were started mid-Feb. I've got everything crossed for them to give me a few fruits this year (there are some flowers just appearing now...) ~ if not, I'll bring them indoors (they're in unheated GH) and attempt to overwinter them .......

        • Small buds starting to appear on the Norfolk Naga, maybe a bit late in the day for this one!

          Fuego's doing quite well though.

          • This appears to have happened practically overnight...anyone have any idea what this is on my chilli leaves and if it's a bug how to get rid of it? Will it have affected the fruit?

            Thank you.

Sorry for some reason photo does not come out very clear when using iPad!

              • Just wondering if it could be greenfly? Just cleaned the window and sill where I had the plants and there are a few greenfly there.

                • It looks like greenfly skins. They shed their skins periodically as they grow.

Take them out side and spray them down.with soapy water ,then clean water, wipe off any that are left..then keep a eye on them.

If you can bring them indoors during September you should still get a decent crop. Ive often had chillies fruiting at Christmas.

this year i started late, so next year i am going to start in jan as i now have a heated propagator and grow lights.
i hope to have a bigger greenhouse...but we will wait and see about that.
will i decapitate? ...i will wait and see...maybe..yes
will only keep 3 of each ,two to grow on and one spare just in case..if it all gos well will give it away

well thats the plan at the moment

                              • I would love to start mine in January but would definitely need grow lights to do that. My seedlings get a bit leggy on a south facing window cill in February.

I may ask Santa for grow light set up, if I can work out where it's going to live!
