Chillies - what are you growing/overwintering?

I think so - I've been "market testing" and no one has been taken ill yet so that's a plus.

I've really gotten positive feedback and I've had to give away a couple of jars to people in work (my guinea pigs) who really liked it a lot - some 40 people. I'm trying to get the balance of varieties right next year to give us maximum ability to make more.

It's all great fun - which is the main thing!

If you are talking about sulphur candles, I have used them in the past...Sometimes use them at the start of the season when getting greenhouse ready for the new influx..

Hi Trip, I have ordered one via a certain South American river. I'll clear the plants out soon but I think I'll hold off using it until next spring also, that way hopefully the winter cold should have an impact and the sulphur candle finish things off. Meantime a bucket, a sponge, and I'll try some ***** Fluid, give it all thorough clean.

There were some aphids early season, especially on overwintered plants, but then the ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings got stuck in

Hi Chris, I try to be organic too. I personally am just not seeing certain insects anymore, I honestly don't think I've seen a single ladybird the entire summer! which is a little worrying. If they were more prevalent I'd go out and catch some to release inside the GH.

Philthy, where have you been? Love your chilli selection in the VVS! I use Jays() fluid I dilute as per pack I structions and put it in a spray bottle and spray the whole GH, then I jet wash the lot off

Hi Scarlet, just really busy these last months. Been keeping an eye on developments all things chilli though Afraid I've rather blown it to contribute to the seed circle this year, I've not isolated anything so all seeds will be hybrid. I'll try and put a few pictures up over the next couple of days of progress this year. I'm looking forward to starting my yearly pruning though, getting rid of all the damaged leaves that have bugged me for weeks should be quite therapeutic

I grew 3 plants from Habanero White chilli seeds in the 2016 season.

The fruits on these plants have turned out differently to expected. Initially I thought it might be only the earliest ripening plant, but all 3 plants are the same. The chilli pods are both more elongated and more peach coloured than expected

Snapped the last of the chillis and they are in a dark place some with bananas and sort of chopped it back. I was in a funny place yesterday and it had to be done there and then.!!

Will get some fleece at the weekend and attempt to start overwintering early. Impatient yes I know

chillies are best left on the plant to ripen. Why have you snapped the main stems of the plant off? It needs its leaves.

If I wanted to get a heated propagator for a new batch when when would an ideal time to start!

Generally if you want to over ŵinter a plant, bring indoors and leave in a cool room. (It's too cold in the UK to expect a plant to survive outside) The plant will go through the seasons, this time of the year it should be heavy with fruit (very much like apple trees) wait for them to ripen. Pick when ripe. ( unless you are desperate and you need them in a curry that day!) slowly reduce watering and the plant will loose it's leaves, (some loose all, others not so many). You can trim the plant to reduce its size, and/or trim its roots. I trim the plant to make a good shape if there are some long branches shooting off otherwise I let them be. Early spring start to increase watering and prune out any dead or or brown tips. Repot into a bigger pot/new soil.

Get yourself a heated propagator for Christmas and seeds ready early Jan and watch this thread! Don't be impatient and sow too early. Some grapes here have grow lights, they can get away with an early January sowing. I try to sow mine end of January , beginning of feb.

I left this Numex twilight outside a few nights ago by mistake. It seems to have got rid of the aphids which was my plan but now it seems to be dying. Is it done for or will it over winter?

Looking at it scoot, you have nothing to lose by trimming it now, follow scarlets advice above! ^

I've picked 8 'crosses' tonight, straight into the freezer for sauce production later..

..also managed to increase my seed stash, a very nice man has donated me..

I wish I left mine a little late to cut down. There's always next year 😢
