Chillies - what are you growing/overwintering?

What are the 10, and what's on the list at the moment?

I've already got far, far too many varieties of seed to grow next year and yet I've just ordered some more. Hopefully the foil-packeted ones will be OK for future years.

Now in the house for potential overwintering:

Burkina Yellow
Santa Fe Grande
Numex Sandia
Cheyenne F1
Golden Cayenne
Orange Habanero
White Habanero (which is probably a Pink Habanero)
Elysium Oxide F6
(Elysium Oxide F5xBurkina Yellow) F1
(Elysium Oxide F5xPaper Lantern) F1

Plus the Turbo Alberto crosses which may be more cold tolerant, so I'm giving them a chance to overwinter in the greenhouse.

a few things to take into account ,light levels (is the room south facing ?) temp in jan to april (are you going to have the heating on in that room ?) air movment if you are putting them in a greenhouse inside a room you could have probs with mould and pests ,how many plants are you looking to grow ? hope this doesnt pee on your chips too much ,cheers

I'll be amazed if it does...my red manzano's have already been frosted and kicked the bucket. They may have some 'cold tolerance" but they won't manage a hard frost.

# didn't you try last year to overwinter some in the GH? What happened to them?

I'll be growing maybe 15 plants on east and west facing windows and in a small south facing growhoyses if at all possible.

Yes the heating will be on in the rooms.

I have brought a number of plants inside at this stage including some annuals that still have a second flush of flowers and developing chillies 😀
Will probably try to over winter a few like the Habs, Lemon Drop etc

I think you may be a bit further south than Chris...chilli plants won't survive a prolonged frost. I've had a couple of plants survive a ŵinter in my unheated porch (Perspex roof) but it's very sheltered and the warmth of the house wall helped...and it was a warm winter.
If you want them to ripen up now I'd bring them inside.

Yes they are still seedlings it's now upstairs out of the way in the loft conversion by a radiator. Have managed to set a timer so I don't need to keep checking etc.
Now I will try to worry about something else like sons gcse's which he is doing in may

Trevor was almost pot bound when I emptied him out. So if Simon makes it through the winter he is going to be a nightmare to re-pot.

I thought you were supposed to do a bit of root pruning in spring anyway, while repotting? You'll just have to be a bit more drastic than you would otherwise! Has Trevor bitten the dust then? And what is Simon? (I know I read something about him previously but I don't remember.)

I've came to the conclusion that I'm probably not going to have the room in the house to grow all my chillies all year so was just wondering if one of my plastic growhouses would be good enough baring in mind I'm in north east England.

As with most gardening, it depends on the fickle British climate. As long as the summer weather is half decent then I'm sure they'd love it in a plastic growhouse in a sunny spot. It might even be too hot on hot, sunny days. You'd need to keep your eye on night time temperatures, but I say go for it! After all, how much have you really got to lose?

I don't know what a lot of those are, e.g. Elysium Oxide and Burkina Yellow. Do you think it's worth overwintering annuums, then? And what was the Golden Cayenne like for you this year? It's on my "Maybe" list for 2017, I'd go as far as saying it's a strong possibility, but I read somewhere that despite the seed companies' glowing reviews, it's not all that prolific a producer.

OK so hopefully now they are somewhere warmer, they will pop for you. Do the lights provide extra heat? Otherwise, there's no point having them on yet. Did you make your setup or buy it ready made? I'd really like to get some grow lights but I'm DIY averse and not sure I can make a frame for holding them above the plants.

Stick them on paint tins like I do whilst I await the time to make a frame for them

Simon & Trevor are Dorset Naga's. Trevor is no longer with us ( because he's in the compost ) and it's a long shot for Simon to make it through the winter as he is still in the tunnel. Wrapped in lots of fleece and with a cloche over him, and fingers crossed! He's to big to come into the house ( 160lt pot ). I've personally never worried about root pruning. He will lose some during repotting but none will be deliberately pruned.

But what are the lights hanging from? Oh, hang on - is it the lights that are supported by the paint tins, not the plants?

So revising your list up or down? My varieties have gone up a little, number of plants is going up so much I'm starting to scare myself

Whisper it quietly....I probably had too many plants in 2016

For 2017, I've combined my chilli and sweet pepper lists, so that will reduce the total number of varieties by about 4.

My grow list is now limited to 31 varieties, based on the number of rows in the computer document I use to keep track of things. Although that's 31 per page, but only page 1 gets printed out for ongoing record keeping of sowing dates, germination etc.

There are others in reserve on page 2, ready to be moved up, swapped around, or ones that I might have to leave for the 2018 list

RIP Trevor and good luck Simon. I can't even imagine what a 160l pot looks like. So I've googled it - it looks big enough to grow a fair sized tree in.

Simon before he got cut down so his cloche would fit over him, unfortunately you can't see much of his pot.
