Brassica Collar Advice!

Heyup, it's me again with another silly idea...........
I have several lengths of 63mm downpipe & it got me thinking, most Brassicas I grow, for whatever reason grow a quite tall stem & was wondering if by using 6" lengths of pipe (3" below soil level & 3" above) would deter rootfly, slugs & help stop windrock.
If so, should I pot them up into the pipe then pull a plug out before sinking the pipe plus plant or should I just plant them into the bed & slot the pipe over the top hoping not to damage the plants/roots?

It might deter slugs but they could easily climb up it.

Don't think it would help with root fly as they could fly down it.

It would help with wind rock.

Just my first thoughts having never tried it.

Add copper tape around the pipe maybe?

I would have thought it would provide a nice cool sheltered spot for slugs by the stem to use to pop up and attack the new growth. Difficult to police too.

That's because most of them are inside the pipes.

Mine grow quite tall stems and flop over, does´t cause me any problems so i just leave them but i could imagine it would help the keep in them place.

I wonder if you could put a silicone type lid on the top with a hole for the stem to come out of and then nothing could go down cut in half so it is easy to slip on and off. I have a picture in my mind of what i mean but cannot seem to explain myself.

Sorry BM but seen plenty of snails round the back of soil and drain pipes in my time.

A better use off the pipe would be,instead of loo roll middles/bottomless pots,only push it out the bottom before planting,wash and reuse,you choose the length of the pipe,i sometimes use my 3in lengths as thus,twist a bit into the ground,plant a few seeds,such as snips,swede or carrots,just so you know where they are,then remove when plants are easy to see,it also acts as a little wind barrier on the emerging seedlings,
