  • Sad news about Bucket No 1.
Most of the seedlings have disappeared I think they may have been slugged
Moral of the story is - don't sow them at their final spacings but more thickly and thin later. Although I guess the slugs would eat more if they were there!

I recommend copper tape around the outside of the pots.

        • First outdoor pot (Marion) is germinating. Always seems like an age before they appear - in reality it is just over 3 weeks.

          • Today I sowed a tub with Nantes 5
The earlier two tubs sowed 27/2 and 6/3 both doing well. Will need to think about thinning some time soon!

This year I'm standing all my pots of seedlings in gravel trays. So far it seems to be keeping the slugs at bay, but it's early days, and as I have no sign of carrot seedlings yet, I can't be sure if it's just too cold, or if they have been likewise silently slugged.

                    • Started a couple of buckets this week, indoors - it's just too cold outdoors still.

Anyway, Jackarmy put me on to this guy a few weeks back regarding Celery growing.

He's got a few great wee videos on YouTube and loves his flower buckets.

I used this little tip on sowing carrot seeds in the pot (and enjoyed the pizza as well).

                        • I've just read through this thread. Will carrots truly grow just in sand? Has anyone tried it? I think I'd like to have a go. What do they taste like? Surely they can't be very nutritious if they have no tasty compost to eat?

                          • Carrots can indeed be grown in pure sand, obviously you will have to supplement the feed.

                              • I'd just use a balanced liquid feed, something like Gr0wm0re or whatever I have at hand, the way I look at it is if they were in the soil, would you be worried about feeding them?..............
