Well no, but I pride myself that my soil is at least a couple of steps up from plain sand

I have liquid seaweed, that will probably be OK then?

    Endless wonder.

      • Sowed a pot of Eskimo today. These will hopefully provide main crop carrots through next winter.

        • Pot number 3 sown this afternoon. Round carrots Rondo.
The first two pots are still doing well although the Flyaway variety germinated much better than the Scarlet Horn.
I havnt thinned them out yet though.

          • sowed bucket 4

A quick growing 'parmex' variety called Rondo.

Also had to thin bucket 3 today. I sowed thickly because it was old seed....better germination than any of this years packets. Typical

            • First 3 pots all germinated - but were eaten
Pot 4 has been covered with a piece of glass from a picture frame. They're growing well - and I don't need to water them.
I'll do the same for all future pots. Must sow Pot 5 tomorrow.

              • What a brill challenge VC.

I'm sort of joining in. I sowed some carrots (Amsterdam Forcing) in my hot bed in February. They came up but were munched into oblivion by little bug(ger)s. Yesterday I made another small hotbed at the lottie and sowed the entire thing with carrots (same variety). Will keep you posted. I have used the compost produced by last year's hotbed to sow them in.

                • Mine are in pots on the bench in the greenhouse. Had them covered with sheets of plastic until they germinated.
I now have upturned hanging baskets over them as they grow taller and keep them covered with very fine mesh.
No sign of slugs yet, so seems to be working at the moment.

                    • Buckets numbers 2 & 3 still not germinated. Bucket 2 rainbow mix ( dodgy Chinese seed) sown 15th March. Bucket 3 Yellowstone sown 26th March ( I may just be impatient with these little fellas )

Other (none challenge) carrots sown same time and place as rainbow mix have germinated.

                      • Bucket numbers 1 and 2 (though done at the same time) still nothing, thought the beetroot sown at the same time is now coming through very thickly! Decided last night to cheat slightly and I'm now chitting the last of my samurai seed and some nantes 5 in damp kitchen towel in the hope of some results.

                          • Sowed the last of the 4 18 inch square pots today - this one with Nantes Frubund Fastcrop. That finishes the maincrop carrots - I will sow more for baby carrots later.

The 2 indoor pots are growing well under the grow lights, but the first one is getting rather tall and will have to be moved soon.

                            • Just going to go look at mine, I completely forgot! Ok can just see the first little green shoots peeping up through the soil! Didn't know the slugs/snails would eat these too. Will put some copper tape round the bucket, it worked last year for my runner beans.
