  • I'm debating whether to put my carrot seedlings outside.

They've been in an unheated, well ventilated greenhouse.
When I say well ventilated, I mean that the door and three panes of poly are missing and the window is seized in a fully open position

Now I need more space the obvious solution is to place the buckets outside from next week (warmer night time temps predicted) but they're doing so well! I fear that something catastrophic will happen if I move them

    • I've just moved the 2 earliest small pots off the windowsill into the growhouse today as I needed the space for tomatoes. I've been waiting for the frosts to disappear but I think they should be ok. The varieties I grow are all cold tolerant (Nantes Frubund, Marion, Eskimo), so I don't know how well other varieties would take to being put outside now.

        • Chartenay red sowed on 3rd March in black pot. Thinned out earlier, coming along nicely

Having an experiment started carrots in small pots to plant out later on.

Sowing some more today in to pots

          • Well mine are exactly the same, just peeped through ages ago and stopped growing. Maybe they don't like the cold and rain?!

That sounds about right. The ones I started in small pots were only sowed about 2 weeks ago, already bigger than the ones that are outside which was planted 2 months ago. They'll all come on though no doubt when the weather livens up a bit.

                • Bucket no:7 sown
                  Amsterdam 2
                  Only two buckets to go.
All other buckets have germinated apart from no:6 chantenay red cored but they seem to take about 3 weeks so no need to panic..... Yet.

                    • Yesterday, re-sowed the Parmex as there's only only one seedling left, the rest are slug casualties I think. Also sowed a pot of Chantenay Red.

                      • 8 buckets on the go with another on the way tomorrow.
The first 5 have germinated well apart from 1 where strangely only 1 half of the pot has emerging seedlings

Anyway, carrots in pots are the future for me - less hassle, no thinning required and whilst it's still early days - it's looking a lot more successful than sowing them directly in the ground.

                        • I forgot to add that all my pots are outside - however, I'm lucky that we experience a lovely tropical climate here in Hull.

                          • Sowed another bucket of Nantes Frubund today - the last sowing until July when I will sow a bucket to overwinter.

                            • My pots of main crop carrots in my carrot cage today:

left to right: Nantes Frubund sown 7/4 (just germinated), Eskimo sown 3/4, Nantes Frubund sown 18/3, Marion sown 6/3. In front are turnip Atlantic with a couple of calabrese seedlings squatting on top and cabbage Hispi. The parsnips are just out of the photo on the left.

                              • what are your parsnips in Penellype?
I would love to try some snips at home if they can be grown in containers! Would it need to be huge though?

Sorry...off topic and all that a carrot tip...it turns out Bearded dragons go absolutely crazy for carrot thinnings!
