  • Have I killed my garlic already?!

Planted some garlic outside last week and now it has turned really cold and frosty! Will it be dead before it gets going? Damn weather...

No do not worry garlic is meant to have a good cold spell.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

It will be fine, as long as the ground wasn't waterlogged when you planted the cloves or they will rot. Garlic needs the cold to allow the cloves to form.

Ok great, hopefully ok then! No the ground wasn't too wet, just damp, I put them in a raised bed and the drainage seems pretty good. Fingers crossed I see some green shoots soon when the weather warms up a bit then!

Mine were going great guns but with the recent cold weather have slowed down considerably. I went to re-pot mine yesterday and they were frozen solid!

Now just hoping theyre not too wet... theyre pretty resillient though, mine sat in a puddle for a few weeks last year and most of them still made it!

Do you feed garlic at any stage in the spring? When are they usually ready to harvest and how do you know when they're ready.

I top dress mine with some wood ashes from the fireplace but other than that i leave them to get on with it.
It is hard to say when to harvest, its big to harvest here very immature and they use the whole thing. Normally when the leaves yellow and fall over you get a good idea.

Glad yours have popped up Jen.

Probably June or July. When the foliage dies down.
