Jacks Magic compost

Just spotted online that homebase is selling 30lts of Jacks Magic compost for £1.43 a bag, which by my calculation is really cheap (about 4.7p a litre?). It doesnt look like its stocked by many branches though. Ive got 10 bags reserved, but im having to travel 10 miles or so to get it.

It's a shame that you don't often get such good offers for a decent peat free compost. Jack's Magic looks to be about 85-90% peat. It's even difficult to find the New Horizon brand since it was rebranded as Bowers, let alone at a good price.

I love Jacks Magic.... Bought a bag on a whim a couple of years ago as I had a voucher. Lovely thick, dark, crumbly stuff, in my mind what proper compost should look like. No idea if its peat free or not, its just very lovely to work with!

Ooo posted at the same time! Is it really that high in peat? No wonder its nice! I saw New Horizon on the webpage of one of the cheapy stores - it may have been B&M.

Agree with you on the peatfree WendyC. Am trying to avoid peat-based composts but there aren't that many stockists of decent stuff around. I had GroSure last year and it was horrible stuff - sour and twiggy.

I did a stock check and found it was sold out for over 30 miles around here... Never mind.

I got some decent compost and manure from Creativegardenideas a few months back. They were doing a 3 for 2 offer, worked out 3x 70l bags for a tenner. Not sure if the offer is still going though.

Something new I've learnt today.................I can fit 30 bags of JM compost in the back of the car. I left 28 bags for someone else with a large boot
The HB lads were very helpful. They trundled the complete pallet of compost out to the car, loaded up the 30 bags and trundled back into the store with the remainder. It was chucking it down and we were all soaked.
The compost can stay in the car until the rain stops - next week?
Hope this stuff is as good as some of you say!

I went for 10 bags but couldn't control myself when I realised they had more!!
When the lads were loading the car I thought that every bag on the pallet was for me and I was prattling on about how they could put some aside for me and I'd come back later for them since they'd never all go in. They must have thought I was nuts too as they'd already counted up to 26 and there were only 4 more to squeeze in
