Tomato question

Hello first post here!

I've been givin 2 tomato plants about 60cm high

OKay new to this plant your own thing so do I try and get a grow bag or pot them? Are they likely to grow on from now? How do I support them , with canes etc.

Hi RR and welcome to the Vine!

It's my first year too, so don't have what you might call a wealth of experience - however I'd be inclined to put them in a pot each with a multi purpose compost, and let them get on with it! Put a cane for each one for a bit of support, and remember to keep them watered (as if that's been a problem this year!) and they'd appreciate a bit of plant food every now and again.

More experience grapes will be along shortly, tho'....

BTW, where abouts are you? If you can put your town/county in the location bit, it helps as sometimes advice for growing is different depending on how far north/south you are.

I have no idea what variety they are come to think of it (will ask person who gave me them later)

Put in my location we've not had that much rain really only a few weeks back when it was flooding all over.

hubby got me 2 pots to put them in yesturday so tomorrow will get them planted.

I think pots are superior to the "growing bags." Good luck and keep up updated.

Hi and welcome to the vine! You could always "combine" the two methods described above - slice the bottom off your bucket then insert it into a grow bag, fill up the pot with compost and then put in your plants. Bernie

I am having the most successful year ever with my tomatoes. I have tried and tested loads of different methods and the best ever seems to be planting in a very large pot, (the bigger, the more tomatoes) and mixing garden compost with shop compost and manure in equal amounts. the home compost stops the shop compost drying out to quickly. I also tear up comfrey leaves and add them to the pot, these ferment releasing valuable potash to the soil to ripen the fruit.

The only thing I have read is to feed every week there in flower and when the fruit is growing. I use wither tomato feed or chicken pellets. My uprights are very poor but the tumblers are loaded with fruit

Finally got them planted ! They have taken really well and I've put them under a 'growbag'house as the mainly sunny spot tends to get windy!!

I've got flowers everywhere now!!

Even though new to this I have successful grow strawberries and taken runners from them!

The kids have grown pumpkins to see who could grow the biggest (I'm a childminder so we are doing a project on it too lol)
