Gherkins or cucumbers?

Now I want to grow gherkins..

Yes, Ms-T, I'm tempted again. I grew two the Paris ones but had no success with them. Mind you, I don't do well with cucumbers either.

I prefer growing gherkins to cucumbers.... Smaller less waste...
They can be used raw just like cucumbers... Taste same

I prefer the gherkins.

They're faster and more tolerant than cucumbers and the smaller fruit go (raw) into packed lunches...my kids eat them like apples. I find they taste the same but are less watery and more crunchy.

I usually grow the gherkins in my greenhouse/garden where I can pick daily and the cucmbers up the allotment where there is more space.

We have recently had a lot of Russian, Lithuanian and Polish people get allotments on our site and it seems they specialise in making pickles. I plan to grow extra this year to try the all the recipes and methods they keep telling me about.

I tried growing Gherkins last year and only got three, so decided not to bother this year - especially since I'm a polytunnel down at the moment.
May well have another go next year.

outdoors, though quite sheltered, I've had some success with gherkins so yes definitely recommend, for raw eating...only cucumber triumph was with La Diva, which are small anyway. TBH try every year, but seedlings die before fruiting...maybe this garden not as sheltered as I think?

Just sown some gherkin seeds - since there were so many votes in favour of them!
Couldn't decide which vareties so I used my usual selection technique - oldest first
Vert petit de Paris (sow by 2011)
Piccolo di Parigi (2012)
National Pickling (packed 2010)

Six seeds of each - wait and see time

PS I have a sinking feeling that the first 2 "Paris/Parigi" ones will be the same thing

Piccolo di Parigi (2012) - 6 germinated
National Pickling (packed 2010) - None!! Time to chuck those seeds
