Last year's glut???

I was just wondering , having read a few posts recently about gluts, did you overdo sowing anything last year?
I do tend to sow more than I need as we seem to lose quite a few seedlings along the way....
so , was there anything you overdid last year?

we overdid our kale tbh , but thank goodness we have friends, bunnies and chooks to chomp their way through the exceess!
no doubt we'll be cautious this year with the sowing and find we have a shortage!! Ha!

as I have about 50 espelettes on the go I can see we're in for a spicy year ahead!!

First year of having my plot I sowed far too many cabbages. Probably only eat 1-2 a week and I have about 30 summer ones all ready together, most of which were sadly composted. Now I choose varieties which will stand for a bit and plant about a dozen at a time.
I had too many outdoor cucumbers last year. I need to find a smoother skinned one as well. (I know you can knock the prickles off!)

Since October I have been harvesting broccoli, I thought I was being clever planting every 3 weeks but a cold spell brought so many ready at the same time. This is at the moment. Letting some go the flower the ladies love picking at the flowers and the bees are already around

Last year wasn't a glut year for anything, unfortunately.

Amazing Lisa............I always get gluts of one kind or another so this year is going to be a SFG year. That way I can hope to contain my sowings.

I sowed all my 50 lettuce at the same time, god knows what I was thinking!

Too many runner beans, and I'm never going to finish up all the packs I froze! The thought of not having enough runners is just too awful, so I'll do exactly the same this year but try not to freeze so many..........

I started last year with a glut of PSB. I was giving it away by the bagful to anyone who would take it, and still a large amount went to flower. Unlikely to be repeated this year as I sowed half the number of plants and some of them didn't grow well.

Next glut was spinach, mainly because I was doing a comparison between an ordinary pota nd a self watering pot to see if there was any difference in bolting time. There was - the self watering pot lasted about 2 weeks longer before bolting. First time I have ever had enough spinach to make soup, and even so, some ended up in the hotbin.

Then there were the courgettes. It didn't seem to matter how often I picked them, there was another lurking unseen somewhere. I had one Goldmine plant with 10 courgettes forming at the same time. For the first time some of these ended up in the hotbin too.

Finally it is the turn of the carrots. I adore carrots and planted 4x 1m rows at my friend's house as well as 7 large pots full here. I'm currently munching my way through the last bagful from my friend's house (the horses have had quite a few of them) and I have 2 untouched pots and half of one I am currently harvesting left.

Far too many broad beans last year....I really enjoy them but not every day!

I don't grow that many of anything g but grow lots of varieties. I find this minimises the impact of gluts and the risk of having nothing if (and when) anything fails. That said, did freeze a heck of a lit of beans last year, can't see well have eaten them all before thus years crop start up. Also was a brilliant tear for carrots, still have about 5 x 4' rows in the ground! Winter cabbage on the other hand were a bit pants so the extra carrots have been very beneficial

I was hoping for a glut of courgettes but it didn't happen out of 6 plants I only got around 8 courgettes all summer

No real gluts here sadly - though I did finally have enough tomatoes to do something other than eat them fresh. We're still eating the dehydrated ones and they are fabulous. Must remember to do that again this year!

I had loads of broad beans, but they get made into felafel, so they vanish rather rapidly too.

I get a glut of cucumbers every year, from just two plants. But it's not like I can just go down to one plant in case of dies though and I'm left with none. Only so much home made tzatziki i can eat though.

I also plan huge gluts of broccoli, tomatoes and french beans, as I always make a big batch of chicken and broccoli sauce (for pies), tomato sauces, and bags of french beans (they just freeze really well). The gluts are my winter food!
