  • Lime

I have never added lime to my plot before, but wonder if I should? Am I right in thinking, you don't add it where you intend to grow potatoes? But where you intend to grow brassicas? And what about beans?

Grateful for any advice ( in simple terms, please!)

    Thank you

I can't help at all Dorothy. But I will be watching this thread with interest. I'm like you, some where in the back of my mind I know lime has something to do with brassicas. I have no idea when or how much or even why

Brassicas like a comparatively alkaline soil. Potatoes are less prone to get scab in an acid soil. Pointless adding lime if your soil is above neutral pH though. Acidity/Alkalinity is on a scale nought to fourteen. One will be pure acid and 14 pure Alkali.

Most plants thrive at about 6.5 on the scale, just short of neutral. Clubroot on brassicas does not like alkali conditions so area for those probably better nearer to 7 (Neutral) or even slightly higher at 7.5pH

So I guess I should buy a testing kit, and see what's what!

Are you having problems with your brassicas? If not then don't do anything different, you don't have to add anything unless you have a problem.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

You could add a dash to your pint of lager - but you come across as a lady with class, so maybe not.

I thought the thread was about lime fruit probably because I've just ordered some kafir lime seeds. I use kafir leaves in cooking and thought I would have a go at growing some. If I actually get the fruit as well it will be a bonus
