  • Can I re use last years mpc to grow this years spuds inpots

Last year I grew my spuds in large tubs, the compost has been left in the tubs all winter. Can I use it again for this years spuds ?? I was going to seive it and add chicken manure pellets and grow more ??

Yes, that's what we do. Although we get rid of the roots etc before winter.
Don't do too much seiving, but fertilise the MPC at the start and then a couple of times more as we go along.
This is our 3rd year for this lot if MPC.
    Good luck

As long as you didn't have any disease problems with your potatoes last year you should be fine.

I was going to reuse my MPC again this year too. Can any one give me a rough idea of how much FBB to add per say a wheelbarrow load of used MPC thanks

I'll be using the MPC i grew my tomatoes in last year for other things this year such as Carrots, Spring onions, Beetroot and whatever else. I'll be adding some growmore too.

I've bought some fresh MPC this year for my tomatoes and i intend to use it again next year for the same veg as mentioned above and then re-use that MPC (that my carrots, Spring onions and beets are used in this year) for my tomatoes again next year. Basically a little bit crop rotation between my container growing veg.

How long can you get out of doing this? Adding growmore/BFB to it each year and some fresh garden compost (next year as I only started my composting at the back end of last year)?

You can if you add nutrient back to the used MPC. I tend to add half a bag of manure from the garden centre's and mix it in, then add a few spuds. It has worked so far. Fair sized pots, just cannot recall the size and as it is raining I am not heading out to measure.

Not sure if anyone else has looked but I always think that after sitting over the winter that the used MPC looks richer then the new stuff. But it still gets the manure added.

If not manure then try pelleted chicken manure, not a "sprinkling" but a good 3 or 4 handfulls, and maybe more later.

I have no idea how old some of my MPC is. Providing I have had no disease problems I store it over winter in dustbins sweeten it in the spring and reuse.

I use any 7-7-7 fertilizer, grow more etc at the exact ratio of ................. one hand full to about 35ltrs. That will last about 6 weeks or so then I supplementary feed.

I now only buy new compost for seed cutting, purely because it is supposed to be sterile.

Do you do any sort of crop rotation? Or do you just hoy the compost you used for all your different veg into a bin, add some growmore in the spring and then reuse it again (probably on the same veg it was used last year on)?
