To dig or not to dig?

My principle is why have worms and dig yourself. Others call it lazy, but I can't be bothered to argue...

I know this might sound odd, but I actually enjoy digging, but unfortunately my ongoing shoulder problems mean that I'm being forced into using no dig methods this year.

now I have raised beds I just "tickle" the top 2-3ins with the fork and a quick rakeover and its ready to go, I spread the contents of the compost bin over them in the late autumn, and let the worms do the rest, and they are now getting to be like "arnie",bl***y big muscley thugs that get left alone... , i'm not daft enough to interfere, they would probably gang up on me...and these days they probably move faster, it would be like a Benny Hill sketch...

I've not dug since I moved in nearly 4 years ago, and the previous owner didn't dig for all the time he lived here - 10 years. He mulched with decorative bark and I mulch with spent mpc, a sprinkling of chicken manure pellets and decorative bark. The dog regularly uses the boarder as a footpath (boundary issues)

I don't keep on top of weeding so aggressive things like dandelions and borage become quite big before I grab them and pull them out without tools, like this borage;



But I am a lazy gardener naturally, and I had a bad accident a few years ago which makes doing lifting very painful. Basically, if you think 'I want to garden but I don't want to dig' then you don't have to, but you do have to compensate in other ways.

I'd love to go no dig at my allotment Scoot..

I think it's just tradition keeping me digging, my dad Always dug, his dad etc etc..

I have no doubts it's better for the soil.
