The problem is not that there are so many varieties, but that you can buy them all. Just participate in a seed swap (http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...cle_88124.html). You will then get way too many tomato seeds, but at least they will be ones that someone else thought were particularly good. You randomly sow a few of those and select the one you like best, and save seeds from that. After that you can ignore the catalogues.

There are nearly 5,000 varieties - there have to be a few hundred crackers in there!

I've got 92 varieties in my seed tin, and am trying to get about 20 varieties growing in and out of the greenhouse this year. There is a really good tomato review thread on here, which I have been poring over.

And your tastebuds might not like the same as other people - lots of people like sweet toms, I really don't. Red Zebra, Purple Ukraine, Blush, Black Sea Man, 100s & 1000s, Black Cherry & Gardener's Delight/Sweet Million are some of my current favourites.

Planetologist's tip is a really good 'un - any seed circle will have a few tomatoes in it, usually ones that you don't find in catalogues that often.
