  • Anyone tried this way of growing tomatoes?

Hope this is the right board to put this on, couldn't decide between this and allotment/DIY.

I came across this the other day, I won't link the website as it is full of adverts but seemed an interesting way of growing tomatoes and other climbers.
Basically get a big bucket, drill holes around the sides and bury in the ground up to the level of the holes (they said about 10"). Plant 4 tomato plants around and then wrap some (large holed) mesh around to support them. Water in the bucket so it goes straight to the roots.

I'm thinking of giving this a try this year, has anyone tried anything similar? I'm thinking crops might get a bit lost in the middle, but it should be easy to wrap some plastic around the mesh to protect from blight.

Not sure about the mesh - would it perhaps make it more difficult to get to and manage side shoots and also possibly make the bottom of the plants congested and prone to disease?
The bucket for feeding & watering makes good sense, though.

It looks like more of an american way where they seem to just let the tomatoes bush out rather than cordon them

Looks fiddly to pick the toms

Three cordon plants up a tall cane tripod, with a watering pot in the middle works. You still have to tie them in to the canes though.

Yeah, I did wonder about the mesh. Think I'm going to try bucket in the middle, and the tomatoes up canes and see how that goes.

Looks a bit easier than burying 'arfur pallet..............
