Attacking slugs and snails with a cucumber... rumour

So... I have just read on the tinterweb that a few slices of cucumber in a small pie tin will keep your garden free of slugs and pests. Apparantly the chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminium releasing a scent which deters pests but cant be smelt by humans.

Anyone tried this?

Anyone willing to give it a try??
