Why are cucumber seeds so expensive anyway?

These are my 2 Carmen cucumber plants that were suggested to me by many folks, sowed them about 1 month ago, currently in my conservatory

Hmm, wonder why they are so expensive in comparison to other cucurbit seeds ..?

Only 1 of my first 3 sown has come to anything - even that one is looking pretty sorry for itself now, too.

Second sowing(Chinese slangen) has so far, produced 2 seedlings ....
Not taking any chances with these babies - they're being coddled on an indoors windowsill!!!

Tends only to be the F1 or all female varieties that are pricey.

Just a quick update. Paska has definitely done a brilliant job this year. Good crop, good flavour. Absolutely Would grow this variety again.

I've been growing wautoma from real seeds under cover. Lots and lots of 5 - 6 inch cucumbers, really tasty, very prolific (record was 14 in one day from 5 plants!). Best bit is, I'm letting one grow really big & will save the seed for next year.

Keeps well in the fridge, & size is good - use a whole one easily so don't have bits of cuc hanging around in fridge.
