I think that Verve is sold as a simple brand name and where the actual source of the compost is makes a difference to the quality that you get.
Bought some once in an emergency and it was not good. Later I wanted a few bags of anything to add to an area that just needed more material so I bought a couple of large bags (same as yours I suspect). Those bags were decent quality MPC.
Mine were from the same place both times but a few months apart so I would guess were from a different source prior to appearing at the store.
Easiest way to look at it is if it does the job you want, then fine. But the next lot might be a little different. Adds to the excitement.

Ive always used verve and think its excellent for the price, very peaty, not alot of chunky stuff in it.
For me its the best of the the affordable brands and I tried a fair few
Ok its not quite as good as something like Jacks magic buts alot cheaper.
The only complaint I have is the 125 litre bags are so heavy Ive pulled a muscle more than once over the years lugging those things around!Last edited by maverick451; 28-03-2016, 11:07 PM.

Used it for years with no problems at all except for the occaisional bit of twig. Orrisons have 3 x 70 ltr bags of MPC with added something or another for £9 at the moment so I am giving that a go as 210 ltrs for £9 is quite good.I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Another vote for Verve. It's usually been good for me, much better than a lot of the big brand names that used to be brilliant but are now rubbish (J Arthur Bowers, Levington, etc). I don't mind the Westland from the local GC though, that's generally been fairly good too.Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook

I am another one for verve mpc. As Mav. said it is the best of the affordable stuff. I use mine for seedlingS and plants with no probs. When growing stuff in pots I add slow realease, as mpc has low nutrients. The one thing I have noticed is in the last year it seems finer - I think they may have dropped the peat content but that is fine by me.

I've used Verve in the past and it's been a bit variable.
Am switching over to peat-free, given how damaging peat extraction is supposed to be. It doesn't sit well with me to grow organically, and then to use something whose use isn't brilliant for the environment on a larger scale. To the extent that there are now funds set aside purely for restoring the peatlands. Plus DEFRA targets are still to phase out peat in composts for amateur gardeners by 2020.http://mudandgluts.com - growing fruit and veg in suburbia
