  • Putting cardboard in a compost heap

    Hi everybody,

I am new here and this is my first post

I know you can put cardboard in a compost heap but I would like to know if cereal boxes (wheetabix and the like) are ok to put in a compost heap bearing in mind that they are printed on one side.

Any advice or guidence would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Hi there Tigs33, I think it would depend on the size of your compost heap, I put them in mine but tear them into bits first. I think as long as you don't put too much in in one go you should be fine

      Hi PC

I have got two cereal boxes which I have broken up into little pieces

I have a compost heap about 5' x 5' and also a green council compost bin and I was thinking of putting the cardboard in the green bin

Hi Tigs, welcome to the vine. Anything I'm not sure about I put in my greenbin they can deal with it better than me because of the volumes they collect & the heat that is generated in the composting process. All the favourites like veg waste, tea bags shredded paper etc I stick in mine co I'm not going to need it for 12 months or so. So it should have composted down by then.

Hi Nick, I think I will just put it in the green council bin for them to dispose of then.

I have been vegetable gardening now for about 5 years, although I am a very laid back in my approach to gardening. I have got two raised beds at the bottom of my garden and I really enjoy it.

Here is a picture of them

            Hi Tigs,
I can only fault the picture on one thing .... too much grass
I'd be tampted to create 2 more beds than you've got a 4 bed rotation system. Better still have 6 & you can put 1 bed to Chrysanths & 1 bed to dahlias as a sort of set a side

Only joking, Looks good Looks good.

Even if there's only two of you - you can't be getting yer 5-a-day with those small beds!

There's only two of us and we're aiming for 6 x 3.6m x 1.1m beds plus artichoke and aspargus beds. Plus a greenhouse and stuff in the borders.

                  But we are vegetarians.

lol well the OH doesn't eat as much veg as me and I do grow quite a bit of mini veg (well I did last year) I also grew loads of courgettes and couldn't keep up with the amount that the plants were producing, they were turning into marrows!!! lol

I would like to get another veg bed in once we have sorted out the fencing and borders and I would also like to sneak in a greenhouse (OH doesn't like them)

What is all that green stuff. Is it a form of carpet.
