Beginner starting late

I have been thinking about growing some veg this year again. I still need to clear the crap from the back garden for space. But I do have a space at the front where the most sun is, I was wondering about putting another pot out - there is one that needs clearing of whatever is in there. But these two pots have bins (green and grey - waste, no brown) next to them, there's not really any where else they can go. Thinking about chillies in them with some herbs. Would the plants still be edible if the bins are next to them?

Yes, the bins don't leach anything nasty into your pots and so provided they don't cast too much shade, you'll be fine.

Its a bit late to sow chili seeds now but you could certainly buy a chili plant from a garden centre in May and grow it on.

You can sow herb seeds now though and in fact, many of those will do well in smaller pots on your windowsills inside.
Another idea might be what they call cut-and-come-again salad leaves.

Ok thanks. Yeah, going to get rid of the salad seeds I've had for a while (see if they sprout) and I bought some new ones to sow, these'll go on the kitchen windowsill at the back, it gets sun in the afternoon, westish facing.

I still have the old bath and I'm still considering carrots in there, should get a enough with some spring onions as well. Would a bath be high enough to avoid the carrot fly?

Problem is, the house lacks, well everything. It has basically two windowsills that face the sun during the day, living room and bedroom. I put in some tomato seeds (micro tom and maskotka) at the end of march, not sprouted yet.

I have but I think that might be a bit much for me at the moment. I'm thinking containers for now. Just concerned about winds blowing them over.

With our buckets (Ta Morrysongs) I shove canes into the ground to stop them falling over, essentially in the shape of a square.

Don't for get window baskets etc as the one outside my kitchen has Little Gem lettuce, radish and sugar snap peas in it at the moment.

To my knowledge, carrot fly will still attack at higher levels such as baths and raised beds. I would cover with netting to protect them and weigh down with something over the sides.
