Whenever we had colds, we'd have one of these Coal Tar vaporisers burning in the bedroom overnight! Probably banned years ago for many H&S reasons

Yes it was often used to disinfect cages when cleaning out.

Creosote comes from two sources, distilling coal tar and a pure chemical process but both contain benzo-alpha-pyrene, this the chemical that the concern is about. The withdrawal of the licence was precautionary.

Nope it's a well known fact amongst us ferret keepers.
It used to be used by most of us until the formula was changed, I even know a guy who nearly killed a ferret using it for cleaning it's cage.
Said to have similar effects on cats.
