I bought Creosote last year from B&Q difficult to find and had to ask a member of staff if they had it as it wasn't in the garden centre but I'm pretty sure they still have it. I will know for certain this weekend as I'm off to buy some to preserve my new shed I've erected in my back garden.

Creosote is a bi-product of the coke making process. I used to work at a coke works where you could get creosote on tap.

Its like using paint stripper, get some on your skin and it burns like hell. Even the fumes from it can burn your face as I found to my detriment when I painted a hut with it many years ago.Cripes knows what it does to your lungs!I even burned a lump out of my mustache at the time.
It was good on hidy places in chicken huts though as nothing can live wherever its painted.
Worrying thing is it was probably banned because of European H&S laws and if we leave Europe what will happen to similar substances in the future?

Creosote is indeed nasty stuff and should be handled with extreme care which is why the restrictions apply to it's sale. Letting every DIY Tom, Dick and Jane slap it about is just asking for trouble. On the other hand a well built shed given a couple of coats will last a long time.
Back in the olden days the coke and town gas production plants had an excess of the thick black tar and virtually gave it away to farmers, thats why so many old timber clad barns are black and have survived over a century without seeming to require regular maintenance. Even plastic house fittings like windows and soffits won't typically last that long!

It's a bit like marmite - you either love it or hate it! I can't stand the smell and when ive used it I put on a mask.

Bit like petrol when you fill up and get a whiff of it.
