When is the best time to sow winter storage tomato varieties?

I got this horribly wrong last year and they were ripe well before the thought of storage. I have seen a couple of grapes mention they grow de colgar so I would be grateful to know hints and tips on getting green/under ripe toms for storage.

Oops....I sowed de Colgar on Monday with the rest of my toms....never really thought about leaving them until later

^^^^It only matters if you want them for winter storage.
It feels strange asking if anyone has mastered the art of growing under ripe tomatoes. I remember being quite good at it just don't know how I done it

I've never even heard of storing toms, didn't know you could? I would love to here how to and which varieties though. I usually just make the boring old chutneys and suchlike. It's true that you learn a new thing every day��

There are several italian ones in the VSP that Sarico sent in. I shall try and find an old thread of his that lists the italian ones. I have only come across one other and I can't think what it is called. Most of the storage varieties have been lost over the years.

I dunno. Found a different thread of Saricos and one variety was sown as normal so it might have been me storing them in the garage that was rubbish

Hmm, well its a bit late now but never mind, at least ill have seed to learn from now
Apparently they store well in a dry place due to the thick skins ?.

I treat them exactly the same as my normal toms, sowed them a few weeks ago and they've now been transplanted into 3" pots. They ripen a big later than some varieties and go on until first frosts. Have still got one left from last year on the kitchen window ledge. The first year I stored them in eggs crates in the garage and they didn't like it, went mouldy. Not great in the fridge either but punnets on the window ledges work perfectly for some reason. Just check them every week or so and they're perfect.
