The bacteria and fungi that cause decomposition need surfaces to work on. If you break things up or chop them up small you increase the surface area and they will rot down faster than if you leave them in big lumps. Smashing large solid pieces like thick stems with a hammer is better than chopping because there is much more exposed surface area.A life is like a garden. Yeah! Really!
Once the main head harvested, cut a vertical cross in the top of the stem, only a cm or so deep and will sprout a new head, and if your lucky, sometimes 2!
