  • Two tomato questions

I bought some canvas grow bags from Marshall's for my greenhouse Tomatoes.
They are fairly large at 80cm (32in) long and 54cm (21in) wide - My question being is will three plants be a squeeze?

Next question - what is the best and most cost effective growing medium to put in them.

    Thanks for the advice

Looks to be fairly deep, if that's the case & given the growing rings, I think 3 will be fine

Let us know how you get on as the season progresses & remember there is a tomato class in the VVS later in the summer

It's a virtual show that is held at the end of the season with around 30 categories for grapes to post their entries.

Thanks - Any thoughts as to what is the best and most cost effective medium to fill the bags?

I have some of these gro-beds as they are called in my friend's greenhouse. Last year I grew 3 plants at the back of each and a mixture of marigolds and small tomato plants at the front and they were fine. I used the large tomato grow bag compost to fill them with - I found you needed about 2 bags per gro-bed. The hardest bit was getting the watering right - the corners in particular tended to get rather dry.

In response to your growing medium question, I use grow bags emptied out into pots. A benefit is that the compost goes back into my compost heaps to go to the allotment the following year. I have noticed this year that the price of grow bags seems to have crept up a bit.
