Im cynical about where compost products come from, I generally have the idea that standards are better in the UK then here but after reading what Philthy pulled out of a B&Q growbag...

Ran a comparison this seed planting season between a bag of "100% natural" MPC from the local garden shop and some of my molehill soil, a bit of my compost(grass cuttings and some of my own veg waste, shop veg waste goes in the flower bed compost bin not the compost for my edibles).

All the seeds are up. The molehill soil seeds even a 2-4 days earlier. Its a bit more susceptible to mould then the bought compost but its also a lot finer. I dont know how the seeds stay snug either with the big chunks in the bought one.

I've bought verve from bleedin queue for the last 5 years and never had a problem. most others including levingtons and especially garden centres and diy store own brands contain allsorts of crud.this year I also bought some miracle grow expand & grow which is supplied dry and expands 3x when wetted.Although this is more expensive it's easy to store and doesn't deteriorate when dry,its reasonably fine and coir based.

So called cos there's never enough tills open when you need to pay for 4 150 litre bags of compost, no one to help load it in the car either.however there's always someone to check your receipt by the exit

This year, for the first time I tried a multi purpose from a local discount hardware shop. I was desperate to get seed sowing so thought why not give it a go. Hope I'm not in trouble for naming it ,it's durstons m p, it's absolutely the best compost I've bought in years! On my second bag now and the seed compost I've bought since is now being used for potting on, it's rubbish in comparison.
I got some mp from wikces at the weekend, good reviews, but this stuff from my local is still superior. Not saying these little 20l bags will get me through the season but I'm happy tucking my little seeds in it.

I bought 4 big bags on Monday. 500 litres of compost makes for a very heavy trolley but I couldn't get to the checkout from the garden centre because some **** had parked a pallet truck with a cage on right next to an electric cart. Either one wouldn't have been a problem or if they had parked them in line, I could have got by. But these idiots parked them next to each other and completely blocked off the main aisle through the store. The **** even looked at me as I was unable to pass and nonchalantly walked off as if to say 'I don't give a ****' and left me to struggle trying to manoeuvre a very heavy trolley through tiny twisty aisles.

Sorry about all the ****, just replace it with your word of choice, there are many that describe the awful unhelpful staff at B&Q. Sorry for taking the thread off topic and ranting about B&Q too
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook
