  • Blanched leeks

    Hi all,

Anyone have any good hints and tips on how to blanch leeks so that I can a longer nice white stem?

I don't grow for show but would just like a bit more of the white eating part!

    Cheers

Hello Frana & welcome to the Jungle, you can either plant them deep or cover the stem with a 9" piece of waste pipe when young.

Wrap a toilet roll tube around them. The loo roll will need replacing a couple of times throughout the season as it gets wet. Worked for me last year though.

I Earth them up with grass clippings.
I also eat some of the green bits

I'll be following Scoot and using the toilet/kitchen roll method and earthing up a bit.

I earth them up a bit and mulch, too. But I eat a lot of the green as well as I like the stronger taste.

I like the green stuff too, I eat as much of my veg as I can including muddy carrot skin.

I plant them out as deep as I can manage - anywhere between 12 and 20 cm depending on how strong I'm feeling.
