so I have been watching tv and now want to find where to get these potato , purple inside ones

I usually get them from "potato days" ..i picked mine up this year from my local garden club - potato day/pennard plants. I think it was about 20p per seed potato. It may be a bit late now?

I got one in a market in Frankfurt, Germany last year. But unfortunately it went rotten without producing any shoots. I think I didn't keep it in a warm enough place over the winter. Some Portuguese ones I bought more recently in a Czech supermarket are purple only on the outside, and they are sprouting nicely.

I saw that programme, we wondered if purple carrots were better than orange ones

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

According to the programme any purple fruit or veg was good.

Googling says that Waitrose sell purple sweet potatoes, but it is a seasonal product.

Different pigment in purple things, so I'm not sure if they're better, just different. Anthocyanins in purple veg, beta-carotene in orange veg. It's why the recommendation for five a day is to mix the colours as well. (That's what I understand, anyway.)

Sweet potatoes are a traditional food in New Zealand, we call them kumara. I think the purple ones are the original variety grown by the Maori, the orange and gold cutivars have been developed more recently. All the colours taste similar, although the texture can differ - I find the orange UK supermarket varieties tend to turn to mush when they're roasted. Sweet potatoes are a pretty marginal crop to grow in the UK as they need a long growing season. If you want to try them you would probably be better off choosing a variety that's marketed as suitable to this climate.

having read a little more I'm trying rooster purple pots , but I harvest tons of blackberry and blueberries and will grow blackcurrents which contain lots of anthocyanins, just trying to eat more of the right things

if I come across sweet pots I will try growing them, just as another thing to eat

I grow "salad blue" potatoes which are blue all the way through, if you fancy a blue spud. Ive also grown "purple majesty" which gave a good harvest but was a little mushy after cooking and to be honest didn't look that good on the plate.

I've grown Vitelotte and Purple Majesty. Of the two, Purple Majesty was more appealing colourwise (blue chips anyone?). Vitelotte was a bit greyish-mauve. Neither are good for steaming or boiling if you ask me. I'm trying Red Emmalie this year. I've seen pictures of what they look like cooked in a soup - pinkish rather than red but OK as far as visual appeal is concerned.

I grew Roosters last year and am giving them another go this year. Last year's crop had a dark red skin but white flesh. Are you growing a different variety, Kier?

That'll be interesting. I'd not heard of those. Let us know how they do.

I think I want to grow purple potatoes now. I did look for some when I went to the show. Unfortunately there wasn't any. James Wong was raving about them though.
