  • Thinning - Newbie question

Newbie to growing things from seed and i have a question on thinning…..
I have sown various things in module tray and they are now starting to emerge….

the question being when should i thin them down to one?…...and should i do it by chopping the excess seedlings or pulling them…..i was worried if i pulled them i risked up-earthing the one i want to keep by mistake.

    Thanks for the advice

I only sow one seed per module, which means you don't have to thin out. If you are worried about disturbing the others just cut the surplus seedling with a small pair of nail scissors. Keep the healthiest/strongest one.

What type seedlings are you needing to thin?

If you are thinning them out scissors is the best way, as it doesnt cause any root disturbance to the one you are keeping.

If they are seedlings which can be pricked out and potted on though you could keep them all just by separating them

Lettuce doesn't mind being pricked out, they look fragile but don't mind being moved. Get some good module trays, it will save you a job

I always sow my seeds in module trays. Depending on what the seeds are, each module gets either 1, 2 or lots of seeds. I never thin out, I always prick out.
