Tomato question

Noticed on a few of my tomato seedlings before that a some of the first true leaves were quite brittle and literally just dropped off when touched. Even the seed leaves are still on.

I'd take a photo if my phone wasn't buggered.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

They're about 3 inches high now so have their second true leaves as well.

Are they inside or in (unheated) GH or whatnot?
My car gave me a frost warning today @3 degrees C - so depending where you've got them it could be temperature. Could also be too little water maybe even too much... Do the leave look as 'deep' a green as you'd expect / are seeing with other seedings that are ok?

They're inside on a window sill. The leaves looked fine.

The stem of the leaves that fell seemed to have very small lighter coloured blemishes on them.

I think the leaves have a purple tinge. How cold is it with you? Do you leave them on a windowsill at night with the curtain closed? They look a little chilled.

In the first photo all that bit of red stem could be covered with compost,where new roots will grow & it would hold more moisture,how deep is the compost they're in,it looks quite shallow? Maybe it could be too dry/drying out too quickly. You could check the weight of the container after you water them & the next day pick it up & see if it's a lot lighter.

Yeah, they have been on my bedroom windowsill at night. With the Curtain closed as well.

Mine are doing the same thing; no idea why. Same batch of seeds as last year ... growing on the same window sill. For some reason, they're not happy this year at all. I've promised to give tomato plants to a few people but I may have to give them directions to the nearest garden centre if this keeps up.Not stressing it this year though. I'm just making sure they are watered (Two Sheds style) and hoping for the best.

It can be colder there than you think during the night especially when you shut them behind a curtain. Pot them on deeper and keep them warmer at night and fingers crossed they will perk up a bit.

Here are my seed toms,15 types,sown on 16th march,started in prop,indoors,then moved to outside shed as per pic,no heating and next to a double glazed window,facing north,i am hoping to get at least 1 of each potted up today,where there is life,there is hope,am sure yours will pick up shortly Scoot,

I'm not jealous only because my fifteenth and finally variety has germinated today . For some reason black krim doesn't get sown till April.

Scoot, could your problem also be too much direct sunlight? The leaves can get sunburnt especially if you've got water droplets on the leaves.

Awkward things to grow at first tomatoes unless you've got a heated greenhouse (I wish).

I'm pleased you have made my realise this, i really should have known myself. It has been pretty cold here in Co. Durham lately, especially come night time. It was snowing Friday and Saturday.

I'll take them off the window sill at night and put them on my desk in my bedroom.

NO,i usually sell a few on the front at home,also give some away,but not this year,only 1 or 2 of each,apart from the canning type,i shall pick out the best of each,so at least i can hopefully have some seed to save.
Scarlet your toms are great,puts mine to shame,even the peppers/chillis look good,i have just gone green
