  • Best stir fry veg for a beginner

    Hey folks

    Ive been reading lots of threads and blogs and can see a range of oriental leafy greens mentioned. I am hoping to grow some but am not sure which varieties would be good to go for as a beginner - any tips?

    The one I find easiest to grow is mizuna, which grows quite fast and has a pleasant mild mustard taste. The broader leaf ones such as pak choi seem fussier and are very prone to bolting. Quite a lot of them are best sown after the longest day as this is supposed to stop them bolting, although sometimes they still do.

    Most oriental greens are varieties of brassica and will therefore get attacked by cabbage white caterpillars. Insect mesh nets are recommended.

      Thanks Penellype, mizuna it is. I feel a bit like i am talking to a celebrity i have been slowly making my way through your blogthread - you are a bit of an inspiration!

        I've got a packet of mixed stir fry leaves - Speedy Veg Seed - Leaf Salad Stir Fry Mix - Suttons Seeds and Plants

        Lots of the suppliers do similar but varied mixes.

        For me it means I can whack some in (official term) and then figure out what grows well and what doesn't from there.

          Oo i will find those vix thank you. I am possibly getting carried away with what i am sowing but i have no idea what will come up and how much of everything is going to grow and fit in the space i have! Have got a mate who is startig a veg patch at his new house and have told him not to buy anything because i think i am going to have too much of everything

                  I also recommend Chinese cabbage not to tricky and less prone to bolting, mustard greens are good too,while you're at it why not bung in some mooli ,they stand well and give a nice crunchy texture to say stir fry ,a bit like water chestnuts but with a slightly spicy radish flavour,they're good just sliced in salad too
                  don't be afraid to innovate and try new things

                    Bean shoots are very fast and tasty. Spinach and Swiss chard are easy once established for sweating at the end of the stir fry.

                        onions or allium which is bit late for at moment. to early for garlic.
                        bell peppers are good to.
                        carrots about moderate to grow.
                        most of Asian greens are bit strong and can be bit fussy for beginner.
                        baby corn is tough one and requires bit of room to grow enough to be worth it.
                        lots other veg go in stir-fry when comes leafy Asian veg small is salad but bigger leafs go in stir fry but people in Asia like more bitter veg then most westerners like you mileage may very.

                          I've got a tub of mizuna grown in unheated GH, which was very simple. I basically sowed it, watered it and it grew!
                          I've been eating it raw tho' as a salad leaf, what a thicko I am! Didn't know it should be stir fried...!
                          Tasted mighty fine mixed along with rocket and another lettuce (presumably) leaf ....

                            I use it raw, have never stir fried it.

                              Young mange tout are lovely raw also, easy to grow.
