Seeing so many of you picking your first rhubarb reminded me to start this thread for 2016

I picked first baby salad leaves, not sure if earlier or later than last yr. OH said poor bloody plants have hardly started and your attacking them

I was going to pick my first ever purple sprouting broccoli but I'm so full of cold I can't taste anything properly..maybe tomorrow

Radishes - from some old seeds I'd thrown in the chicken run, because I couldn't bring myself to throw them in the bin!



Totally unexpected

Little Grandad's Original Perpetual Spinach (that's its name, honest). Grew for the first time last year, and now v. pleased with the 'perpetual' bit - thinned it out and nipped off the bad leaves in Feb., and it is now producing a good crop of leaves. With this variety, and with the leaves still small, it is possible to cook leaves and stalks together. Later in the year, just cook the leaves, as the stalks can be a bit woody.

At this time of year, it's good to have something coming out of the allotment.
