  • Why are my cucumber and courgette plants leaves paling in colour?

The plants were sown indoors from seed and looked healthy enough but since I've been sitting them outside during the day, they have been looking whiter.

Are they cold? Too much sun? What?

There is no sign of disease or beastie damage, just the leaves paling in colour. They have been repotted in bigger pots and new compost but they are still going pale.

    Any ideas?

Pics would help. I would guess that it's too cold outside even in the daytime. Average temps is still only about 10 degrees.

Well I suspect that it's just too cold. I haven't put mine outside yet and I'm a lot further South than you are! We are still getting very chilly days here despite some sunshine.

Too cold here, so I would think even colder where you are?
I doubt the cucumber will survive, they are such fussy beggars! The courgette might if you keep it in the warm from now on.
            Good luck.....

Not even sown mine yet. Nowhere to put them once they've germinated.

I'm so glad you said that WendyC

Its exactly what I was thinking and I had a sudden pang of anxiety in case I was late to sow!

                  Thanks everyone.

I did try to take pics last night but the colouring just wasn't showing up properly on my phone camera under the artificial light. Will try again in daylight today.

We have had quite warm sunny spells (t-shirt weather on occasion) which is when the plants were going out BUT admittedly they were left out when the sun disappeared and the temp dropped again late afternoon/early evening.

I'll keep them indoors and see if they get any better.

Best of luck! My cucumbers and courgettes haven't even germinated yet - though to be fair, I am only using a cold frame.

The wind chill factor is far too cold for cucumbers even on sunny days and its still only April. Keep them indoors and see if they will recover.

Mine went in the unheated greenhouse 10 days ago. Are you sure they don't need repotting as they are hungry plants

Not sown my courgettes yet either. Far too cold outside and running out of space indoors for now.

It's snowing! And the sun is shining.

Plants and me will definitely be indoors now.

                            @Jonnyt, I have just repotted them so I don't think it's that.

Time will tell in the warm I suppose.

cucumbers hate the cold more nearly anything, I never do well with them unless I sow them late
