Advice on germinating brassicas to avoid them getting leggy

2 weeks ago I sowed some Brussels sprouts seeds and by this morning they were 3" tall with just 2 tiny leaves at the top, I have therefore consigned them to sprout seedling heaven

I think they were too hot and nothing I have read has been clear (to me) on how to treat them. Will they be better germinating and growing on in my unheated greenhouse?

I also sowed some PSB and Autumn cauliflower today, where are they best germinating and growing on?

It sounds as though your sprouts had too much heat and not enough light. They would probably be better in the greenhouse.

I germinate all brassicas outside - one tray of cabbages froze solid but they still germinated a bit later. It seems to make for nice compact plants, not too tall. Just at slug head height

Yes I think all brassica can be. I sow them & put them in the blow away (greenhouse) straight away permanently till germination,they're more hardy than tomatoes & peppers & can take a colder temperature. After germination at this time of year a greenhouse might be too warm for the seedlings during the day & they might wilt so I like them outside soon as possible during the day out of the heat,then back in the blow away at night if it's cold like it has been,I don't plant them out when they're small or sow direct because of slugs,I plant them out when they're a few inches tall,then the leaves can take a few nibbles & all be fine,it's not fine in my mind but the plants are alright.

Containergardener just make sure you net them when you eventually plant them out, else the pigeons will think there christmas's have all come at once when they spot them. I've known them to take young brassica plants down to the soil and leave stumps, my neighbour thought they had been nicked last year when they got his.
