  • Can Runner Beans Survive A Frost?

I'm aware that if Potatoes are subjected to frost, the foliage may die but will recover. Will Runner Beans react the same way?.................before I pull them out.
    Cheers.

Given that they're perennials and will regrow the following year, maybe they will survive!

I've had runner beans die back a bit from frost, so I cut them down to a couple of leaves and they bounced back as if nothing had happened. I guess it may depend on how severely they were affected?

Cross fingers and plant some spares up in pots ,if you don't need them you can always give them away

Depends on how badly they're affected. If it's only superficial then they'll just be pushed back a bit but if it's more serious then you could have lost them. I only sowed mine today as I don't want them too big, too early.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Do you think my runners will recover

I will be sowing more tomorrow just in case they don't

So BM in answer to your question, I'd say no

runner beans will not survive if the growing tip and the first set of leaves have been frosted as thats where everything of the plant originates from, if the tip has been killed then it will throw 2 shoots from the first 2 leaves where they join with the stem.

Thats why you have to careful when you start runners and french beans as they are frost intolerant.

Thanks for your replies. I do have others which will be ready in a few weeks, I'll most likely leave the damaged ones in situ & put new ones along side them.
