  • RIP Cucumbers

    Arrrrrrgh! Stupid me!

I had nurtured some beautiful Louisa cucumbers in their pots and they were strong and healthy.

As the weather had picked up, I put them in the greenhouse but low and behold we had an unexpected nasty frost over night and now the poor blighters have gone to the great allotment in the sky!

It is entirely my fault so am now going to put a few more in in their honour.......am I too late to start growing more?

Haven't sown ours yet. My experience is that cukes are just looking for an excuse to die (too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold, pot too small, pot too big, etc) so no point in rushing.

If it's any consolation Frana, I am about to consign mine to the great compost heap in the sky deliberately!

I had healthy cucs and courgettes until I got excited when I saw a bit of sun and stuck them out in the garden for a few hours.

They've never been healthy since. I'm about to give up on them and start again from scratch.

It's been a strange old Spring, so far I've lost some Toms & Runner Beans but hey ho there's still time to sow some more.

I have four Marketmore cucs in the conservatory that are starting to put out tendrils but I wouldnt even think about putting them outdoors yet. They are far too tender.
There is still plenty of time to sow some more.

I'm not too far away from you and I've not thought about sowing my cucumbers of courgettes yet so you've got plenty of time to sow more.

I've not started Cucs and I'm not intending to, mine never get past the first leaf stage so I gave up ages ago ever trying to grow one. I have left it to my work colleague who seems to be able to grow them at will and brings in his glut into work every summer I'm not jealous but I quickly go off people like that. lol

He even gave me one of his plants last year, told me how to grow it and where to put it in the greenhouse. I nurtured it and spoke to it every night (like prince Charles does) but I obviously wasn't saying the right things 'cos it turned yellow, curled up its toes and went to the great compost heap in the sky. All my melons, toms and peppers were happily growing away, had to lie to him how well it was doing for the rest of the season. And yes I felt bad about that but didn't have the heart to tell him I'd murdered one of his babies.

Thanks all - I am now not only re-assured that my sorely missed cucs will not be entirely alone in the veggie afterworld, but also that I can sow some more in their memory!
