  • Carrots query

    Hi
I sows some baby carrot seed into a shallow pot almost a month ago, they've been in the greenhouse as its been so cold but as yet nothing has germinated.
    Should I..

    Wait longer

Sow some more into pot and cover with compost and see what happens

Empty all out and start again

    Also,
In my Autumn madness I sowed some into a trough which did nothing, although now have green sprouts but I couldn't say there's any carrots.
If I pull them up can I re sow into that compost?

    Thanks.

In my experience carrot seeds (and others from the same family such as parsley and parsnips) take ages to germinate. I would leave them a bit longer.

Carrots don't transplant well. If you do decide to start again I wouldn't use a shallow pot. Use something deep enough to accommodate the long roots - about a foot deep is ideal.

If your overwintered carrots are not big enough to eat now they are unlikely to fatten up much more. They will probably simply produce flower spikes as carrots are biennials which flower in the 2nd year. I would chuck them and preferably change the compost if you are going to sow carrots in that pot again.

        Hi CG!
My first sowing of carrot seed(into deep tubs) took an absolute age to germinate!!! I have done 3 lots so far, and eventually, they've all started to come through - the tops even look carrotty!!!
(Btw they are also in unheated GH)

I used to think I couldn't grow carrots but in fact what used to happen was I gave up on them before they germinated. Patience is definitely a virtue where carrots are concerned.

Out of interest, how often do you water them?

Careful you don't gorge out on those little beauties, CG!!

Think they would've filled out if you'd kept up with watering them and left them a bit longer!!!

Carrot seedlings don't like to be dry so water frequently, depending on whether they are indoors or out. I put my tubs in drip trays during the summer to conserve water.

Probably just shrug their shoulders, put their feet up and say "stuff this, let the kids deal with it" and go to seed.
