Help on Onion Shallot Garlic Bulbs Please

Bought these reduced from the local garden center today at 50p a pack:



Now feeling silly as haven't got a clue what to do with them Never grown onions, shallots or garlic never mind from bulbs. Stupid questions coming ...

1) Are they like flower bulbs and I just shove them straight in the raised bed as they are, water and wait for magic to happen - hopefully it's not more complicated than that!

2) Do they have to go in the soil a certain way?

3) Do I need to plant them all this year or will some store till next year?

It's getting late to plant all of those. Can only advice on onions and shallots as I don't grow garlic. Plant asap with the roots pointing down and the pointed part just stick out from the ground. You might not get the biggest onions this year but you can always use the leaves as spring onions.

I do love a bargain............

1) Yes, just put them in root base down............ but leave a tip showing.
2) Yes, Root base down pointy end up..............
3) Personally I'd gerrum in the ground.

You may find that the onions & shallots push themselves out of the ground or birds may pull them out, if you see any on the surface just push them back in.

If you plant them quite close together, you can use them like spring onions.
I still have some garlic waiting to plant out

bit late for garlic now but they won't store so break into cloves and stick them in same as the onions, pointy bit up wait for them to grow and harvest when the leaves start to yellow, you can save garlic bulbs harvested this year to plant for next year (November this year actually)

Excellent thank you will do that with the garlic and hope to get some good bulbs for planting out again in November. And hopefully get some small onions to enjoy out of it all too.

Plant them in nice neat rows, looks good but the veg don't overly care.
Garlic is a bit late, but as they will not really keep it is either plant them or cook them.
Shallots I expect to be OK and same with the onions.

Would guess that some nice rich organic matter will help.

Plant the garlic about 2ins deep and the onions and shallots with their noses showing.

I havent got my shallots in yet - they can all be eaten on the small side if necessary though
