Tomato feeding?

Would it be possible to get a "be all end all" on tomato feeding?
Everywhere I look I read something different....
Some saying use one when they young and something else when they fruit, others just use the same, a couple claim to not need anything!
There seems to be a never ending contradicting list of ways to feed tomatoes, it's a little confusing

I don't think there is a be all end all to anything garden related, all you can do is do what works for you.

I do it in a somewhat simpe manner:
They get watered with something/anything marked "Tomato Feed" whenever the thought crosses my mind.

I'd agree with Snakeshack only to add that the high nitrogen feed gets the plants big and strong, ready to hold your bumper crop. Then once the fruit comes the high potash feed improves the quality, flavour and ripening of the tomatoes. Hope that helps.

I agree with Bigmally, do what works for you. Remember your micro climate is different to everybody else's. Personally, in the polytunnel, I put a small handful of chicken manure in the bottom of the hole when I'm planting them then feed with tomato fertiliser once the fruit has set.

But for the outdoor ones they get nothing extra after the top dressing on the beds at the start of the year.

I think it's really easy to overdo it with the nitrogen feed. The plants can become very tall and leafy, which feels encouraging, but with fewer fruit in the end.

My tomatoes are grown in fairly small pots so I start feeding with tomato food as soon as the flowers open. I find they quickly start showing signs of magnesium deficiency (purplish mottled lower leaves) if I don't.

Im going to do an experiment this year with 2 plants next to each other

1 isnt going to be fed high nitrogen, 1 high potash, seed what happens.

Seaspring seeds who seem to grow the biggest and most productive chilli plants ive ever seen (2400 chillis of a dorset naga) use chicken manure (high nitrogen) and then top up with high nitrogen miracle grow, even when the plants are fruiting.

Mine are fed from a water reservoir and a capillary wick . The reservoir is refilled once a week with 11 liters of diluted Tomato Feed. I don't feed before they are set up like this

I've generally used Westland Gro-Sure or Wilko own brand tomato feed in the past, or Doff Tomato feed from B&M. I've checked the NPK ratios and Magnesium, and they're similar to Tomorite.

Seems to be a bit of a shortage of tomato feed, at least locally. Have been in to the local Wilko and B&M shops a few times and none on the shelves. And only Tomorite available from Wilko website.

To get through to the end of the season, I've only been able to get tomato feed from Poundland. Seems cheap enough, but only half-strength NPK and only 600ml, so not the bargain it initially appears.

Anyone else found similar shortages locally, or have any other suggestions for tomato feed at a reasonable price?

I dont feed mine at all until the first little tomatoes start to appear. Then i use grow sure tomato feed.

There should be plenty of feed in the compost of your final pot for about 6 weeks so you shouldnt need to feed them for that period. After 6 weeks the little tomatoes are just starting to form. So it works out well.
