If the soil is too damp though, there won't be enough air in the soil which will be affecting the (benefiticial) micro-bacteria levels. It is hard to tell from the picture, but my plants haven' t ever really liked the conditions that promote the green mould. I wouldn't have thought the netting would deplete the air flow that much, so possibly the soil needs tweaking.

Shrinking Spinach

my spinach had some similar crinkled up leaves. Just the big ones, not the smaller inner ones. I snipped them all off and when I examined them i noticed black fly in the crinkly bits on the underneath of the leaf.
I don't keep my soil particularly wet, a little damp, water every few days. The green mould in your pic does suggest that you are keeping the watering too frequent.https://roosorganicallotment.wordpress.com/

Well there you are. Another disaster to tick off the list this year. A good start and then just decline. I know you can grow spinnach this time of year bcause Sean on the allotment chanel has just sown some. I just get so despondant with this, especially when I prepare new raised beds and do everything by the book. Just one plant left and no new seedlings have come up this time.

"Too much nitrogen present in the soil can be just as harmful to plants as too little. When there is high nitrogen in soil, plants may not produce flowers or fruit. As with nitrogen deficiency in plants, the leaves may turn yellow and drop. Too much nitrogen can result in plant burning, which causes them to shrivel and die. It can also cause excess nitrate to leach into groundwater."
